The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Builder Confidence Index is based on a survey of NAHB members done monthly by the NAHB. The survey asks respondents to rate market conditions for the sale of new homes at the present time and in the next six months as well as the traffic of prospective buyers of new homes.
The chart below from the St Louis Federal Reserve depicts the number of building permits issued for privately-owned housing units in blue and the number of new housing units started in the Midwest in red.
