2021 Big Boy Steam Train Tour
Union Pacific completed the restoration of steam locomotive no 4014 in 2019 and planned a five-week tour for 2020 but, thanks to Covid, it was delayed. The good news is, the tour will take place beginning in August 2021 and will include five major display stops in five cities, with St Louis being one of them. In addition, there are whistle stops planned in more than 90 other communities.
According to the Union Pacific website, Big Boy was first put fun service in 1941 and then, after 20 years of service covering over one million miles, was retired in 1961. Union Pacific reacquired Big Boy in 2013 and set out to restore it to its former glory. This is said to be one fo the biggest restoration projects ever undertaken in the history of railroad preservation in the United States.
