Clayton Real Estate - Clayton Homes For Sale

Clayton Missouri was organized in 1877 as the county seat for St Louis County which had just split off from the city of St Louis the year before. Clayton was chosen as the county seat after native Virginian Ralph Clayton donated land for the courthouse with the only caveat being that the new courthouse is named after him. Ralph Clayton received support in his effort to have Clayton become the county seat for St Louis County from Martin Hanley, also from Virginia, who donated a small piece of land just east of the land Ralph Clayton donated. Clayton and Hanley's donated land combined was about 104 acres and is now where the Clayton Central Business district is.

The City of Clayton offers an urban type lifestyle in the safety and comfort of a suburban community. Clayton real estate is an eclectic mix of single family homes, condominiums, town homes and apartments. Clayton home prices vary widely due to the wide range of Clayton housing stock which includes modest bungalow style homes, grand historic old manses and new condominiums, town homes and McMansions. Some neighborhoods, such as Clayton Gardens and Old Town Clayton, have seen much of the smaller, older homes torn down to make way for new homes, many of which in excess of 4,000 square feet and selling for upwards of $2,000,000.
