The term "mansion" or "manse" is often used to describe large, stately homes generally with architectural signficance and often built in the late 1800's or around the turn of the century. No where in St Louis are there better examples of this perhaps than in the Central West End.
During the late 1800's development began in the Central West End neighborhood of St Louis as St Louis prepared itself to host the 1904 Worlds Fair. Unlike many U.S. cities which saw the wealthy show their success through the building of these wonderful mansions but also saw the homes torn down to make way for newer develoipments, such as on 5th Avenue in New York City, the manses of the Central West End have remained largely in tact and preserved.
